Chapter Two - "Helm of Knowledge"
Raid Boss - Thoth (type: Egyptian God)
Chapter Overview
After beating Odin Adkins, you feel something new and invigorating--purpose. The game master has approved of your inquiry, now it is time to obtain the Helm of Knowledge bestowed upon all those that are worthy by Thoth.
Thoth will take some convincing, as he does award the Helm of Knowledge to just any adventurer. You must be worthy. You must study the ways of rhetoric and research to compose a piece that both informs and engages the audience on your research inquiry. You must consult tomes, portals, and other adventurers and peasants in order to acquire the knowledge you seek. You will need to chart your course through diagrams and text. Push forward adventurer and don't look back.
You have just over a month to think about these concepts on your journey. Complete as many quests as you can to gather the resources needed to approach your Thoth, and obtain the Helm of Knowledge!

Raid Overview
For this chapter, you will be working towards the completion of a research guided essay on a topic that has be previously approved by the game master. The approach to the written paper is up to you: Do you want to objectively inform? Walk through the issue in a narrative? Try to persuade the audience to support a certain side of the argument? Do you want to give the audience both sides and let them choose? Ultimately, the decision is up to the adventurer.
The final product will be a 2800 word essay using both primary and secondary research, synthesized to inform the audience of a controversial topic that effects a large population. |
Raid Instructions
All papers must meet the below requirements in order to be eligible for full XP. Your audience is both your peers as well as the game master. In addition, you should also think of a more public audience that most likely does not have much prior knowledge of your topic. It is your job to both inform as well as possibly instruct the audience.
1. Primary Research
The paper must include two indications of primary research that you have conducted. You can either include quotes from at least two different interviews or a quote from an interview as well as data from a survey. The interviews must have at least four questions each with sentence length responses (a full transcription is required, but only selected quotes should be included in the paper). The surveys should have at least 20 responses to at least four questions and the statistics should be included in the essay.
2. Secondary Research
The paper should include at least six sources where at least three are scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. There should be at least two quotes from each of the sources. The non-scholarly sources can be websites, news sources, blogs, videos, etc., but make sure to look evaluate the author/organization's ethos before using the source. The source should be credible and well-written. Two different worknets should be made on two of the three scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.
3. Citations
All direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries should be properly cited in the citation style of the adventurer's choice (i.e. MLA, APA, or Chicago). Please refer to your book Writing in Action for citation directions or PurdueOWL's website. Make sure to use both in-text citations as well as a works cited/reference page.
4. Images and Fonts
The paper must include at least two images that are discussed as to their relevance to the paper either in a caption or in the prose. Remember to give all images photo credit (could be in a caption, but should be listed under the works cited/reference page as well). These images can be directly linked to your issue, but can be more abstract and vague. The use of images can greatly change the perspective of the audience, so make sure to think about your image choices. Also, make sure you change the color and typeface of some words to indicate emphasis, but make sure it does not distract the reader.
5. Reflection
In addition to the research guided essay, the player must also include a reflection of at least 500 words. The player should describe their process of research and writing, their use of rhetorical knowledge, and a final thought on their topic.
6. Quest Log (Digital and/or Paper)
The quest log should include the following:
